I’ll be honest, one of the things that gets under my skin is Christians who walk the fence when it comes to actually doing something of significance for Jesus with their lives. There are far too many believers willing to wear a crucifix around their neck but never carry a cross on their backs.
There are always 3 types of believers we see in the Church:
People who follow the rules don’t impress God, even though they are prone to think they do. They might even impress fellow believers, but their reward is short-lived flattery. Christians who fall into this category usually live homely lives, attend church faithfully, but rarely do anything that stretches their faith.
They give within their limits, budget time for charity work, and make sure not to offend anyone. They are goody-two-shoes, that never wear the shoes of evangelism.
2. Rule-breakers (“I love Jesus, but–” types)
These are the folks who believe that once they’ve prayed a prayer, they’ve sealed their fate for eternity and can now do whatever they want. To them salvation is fire insurance, that is a vehicle to avoid hell rather than an invitation into a relationship with Christ. God hates these people.
They say they love Jesus, but they’d rather not obey him. Unfortunately for them Jesus says that it is the people who do what he says that are his true followers. They hinder the gospel, because they confuse people’s ideas of Christianity with their inconsistent lifestyles.
3. Passionate Jesus Followers
People who passionately pursue Christ may mess up, but they also get up and continue their pursuit. They are not looking to follow the rules, rather follow Christ’s commission to save others. They obey Jesus, though they are not immune to sin. Their end goal is to accomplish much in this life and make an impact on eternity.
Jesus never came to say “follow the rules,” he only said “follow me.” So I encourage you to follow him passionately. It’s not about keeping or breaking rules with Jesus, it’s about focusing your life on growing His kingdom. That means telling others about Jesus and inviting them to join you on the journey to passionately follow Christ!
